Key Stage 4 Options
Here is a video by Assistant Headteacher – Mrs. E. Williams – introducing Options at Rhyl High school with the key information for the options process.
We are holding an on-site Options Evening on Thursday 12th March. Please attend between 3:30pm and 6pm to browse our various options subject information stalls and discuss the choices with our option subject teachers.
Here you will find links to each subject page, which contain a short video/presentation explaining each of the option subject choices in more detail:
This is a skills overview for each option which may support you when considering your preferences:

Key Dates and Process
| 09/02/2026-12/03/2026 | Taster Sessions for Options in normal timetabled lessons. |
| 02/03/2026 | Options website launched to pupils and parents/carers via email. |
| 02/03/2026-12/03/2026 | Time to look at Options Website information at home and in school during CWRE lesson. *Also recommended to talk to Yr 10/11 pupils at break/lunch about their options. |
| 05/03/2026 | Core Subjects Parents Evening (English/Maths/Science/Cymraeg). |
| 02/03/2026-20/03/2026 | Form time mentoring to support pupils with Options preferences. |
| 12/03/2026 | Options Evening – time to discuss options with teaching staff and careers advisor. Email form sent out to choose 5 ranked preferences. |
| 20/03/2026 | Deadline for completion of 5 ranked preferences on email form. |
We will then look at which courses have enough pupil interest to go ahead, and how many classes for each subject can run.
*If a course is not viable due to very low interest from pupils, then we will notify pupils and update their preferences.
From this information, we will then allocate the subjects to option blocks, and we do our best to optimise the pupils into their 5 ranked preferences.
When this has been completed, we will notify you as soon as possible in the summer term, as to which final 3 options have been allocated. Any issues can then be discussed and resolved prior to the summer holidays.
*Changes from the start of Year 10 will be in exceptional circumstances only and considered during the first half term.
